Brian McCarthy grew up in Chicago, Illinois and attended Southern Illinois University in Carbondale, Illinois, where he earned his Bachelor Degree in Fine Art. He then moved to Southern California and has lived there ever since. His works have been exhibited in New York, Chicago, San Francisco, San Diego, and Laguna Beach. He also won the Hallmark Award of Excellence and was named Best of Show at the Michigan Avenue Art Show in Chicago.

McCarthy describes his work,”I have chosen to paint certain subject matter which allows the viewer to stop and take a closer look at everyday objects and see the beauty in them. To establish a way of seeing things in an artistic manner and how the light and shadow helps to define an object and develops the appearance, mood, and atmosphere of that piece. Treating the light and shadow as importantly as the objects themselves in a composition creates a design within itself from the relationship between the two.”

“To paint realistically, but within the details find another more abstract, symbolistic world of painting. To find “Miro-like” abstract shapes within the reflections in ice cubes or light reflecting through a glass. To create a sense of discovery when viewing a painting, finding identifiable representational shapes within the details of an object.”

“Being an artist has given me a lifetime of creative fulfillment and has provided me with a passion for painting that always keeps me busy – when painting, I’m not thinking of anything else but the work – to be fully involved in the process, to be in the zone. Incorporating new techniques and ideas constantly keeps the painting interesting and evolving, reflecting new influences from art and the world around me.”
